A Message from the Research Director

Per Davidsson

QUT's Faculty of Business strives to contribute to the frontiers of business research both within Australia and internationally. Our mission is to combine a "real world" focus on research that is relevant to business and policy practice with an unrelenting pursuit of the highest scholarly standards. To make this possible our strategy is to specialise in a targeted set of key research priorities. To this effect, the Faculty's research effort is coordinated through two Centres of Excellence and three specialised research programs, which also support external collaboration and interdisciplinary research to strengthen its research portfolio.

Significant milestones have been reached along this pathway to research excellence. In the 2007 Thomson Scientific report, the Faculty of Business was ranked No 1 in the country in citations per publication for the years 2002-2006 in Business and Economics. Reinforcing this emphasis on high quality publication outcomes, members of the Faculty have recently had their work accepted for publication in prestigious outlets such as the Journal of Economic Literature and Strategic Management Journal.

The Faculty was successful in securing ARC Linkage Grant funding of over $1 million in 2007.  Three major projects funded in this round include: A Comparative Study of Knowledge Transfer Systems and their Contribution to Knowledge Transfer and Diffusion, Innovation and Socioeconomic Transformation; Growing Sustainable Regions: Developing a Rural Statistical Sustainability Framework; and Firm Early Development and Performance (FEDP): A Panel Study.

Integral to achieving these goals is a commitment to fostering a collegial and vibrant research student cohort and supporting strategic research initiatives that draw on expertise from within the Faculty's four academic schools to build strong relationships with Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs), Research Institutes and industry . Over $1 million per year is invested by the Faculty, a significant proportion of which is directed towards its major research programs.

In the years ahead, we are determined not only to build on what we have achieved but to demonstrate that the Faculty can continue to deliver quality research outcomes that have an impact in the real world of business.
