Supporting staff from non-english speaking backgrounds

The University has a Policy on Cultural Diversity which aims to ensure that all staff and students are treated equitably and can work and study free of discrimination and harassment. This policy recognises that a culturally diverse community is characterised by a wide range of traditions, languages, beliefs, values, ideas and practices. The policies adopted by the University reflect those set down in Australian and International law which aim to be inclusive of all people regardless of gender, class, sexuality, region of origin, race, ethnicity and religion.

In support of its commitment to cultural pluralism and diversity, the University has policies in place which pertain to Human Resources policy and development including recruitment and selection, Curriculum development, participation in Research and Community Service and in the overall Organisational Culture and Environment.

Mechanisms exist within the University to protect staff from discrimination on the basis of cultural differences. Staff and students can approach a Discrimination Contact Officer if they have suffered discrimination or harassment.

Central Equity Section

The Equity Section coordinates and supports a range of services for staff and students including a comprehensive equity training and development program; disability services; affirmative action, equal opportunity and employment strategies; equity data collection and staff networks.

The Equity Section is also responsible for implementing policies and procedures to protect staff and students from discrimination and harassment. This includes comprehensive grievance resolution policies and procedures for all staff and students, training for managers and supervisors in the handling of grievances and a Discrimination Contact Officer network to assist in the handling of discrimination-related grievances.

Other initiatives include an equity recognition and reward program for individuals and projects which show a commitment to infusing equity considerations into all spheres of activity within the University. For further QUT Equity information click here to view the QUT Equity website.
