Inequality, Poverty, and Social Mobility – what should happen after the recession?
QUT’s School of Economics and Finance was proud to play host to Vice-Chancellor’s distinguished visitor and internationally renowned and leading US poverty and inequality economist, Professor Robert Haveman, on Thursday 18 February 2010.
In his exclusive Brisbane address, Professor Haveman discussed some common concerns between Australia and the United States relating specifically to inequality, poverty and social mobility following the economic downturn. Professor Haveman’s talk provided a controversial, new and different policy approach to these basic structural problems.
Robert Haveman is Professor Emeritus of Economics and Public Affairs and Research Associate at the Institute for Research on Poverty at University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has published a variety of papers in leading journals and is one of the world’s most respected economists in the field of public finance, environmental and natural resources policy, benefit-cost analysis and the economics of poverty and social policy. He has also served as a senior economist for the US Congress.

Happiness in Economics
The Faculty of Business and School of Economics and Finance was proud to present an exclusive Public Lecture by Professor Bruno S. Frey, an international renowned and respected Swiss economist on 14 August 2007,
Professor Bruno S. Frey argued that testing theories of happiness in economics has the potential to contribute to the core of economics.
In his only Brisbane address, Professor Frey discussed the interplay between economics and happiness with a focus on income aspirations of individuals and what contributed to well-being in marriage.
A Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) and one of the ten experts of the prestigious Copenhagen Consensus in 2004, Professor Frey has made significant contributions to the fields of economics, political science, sociology and psychology.

Lucky in Wealth, Lucky in Health
On Wednesday 3 February 2010, QUT’s School of Economics and Finance provided an exclusive address by a leading welfare economist, Professor Barbara Wolfe, direct from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
In her well received talk, Professor Wolfe explored whether poor health leads to lower incomes and if lower income lead to poor health. Her seminar focussed on understanding the relationship between income, education and health.
Professor Barbara Wolfe is Professor of Economics, Population Health Sciences and Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin – Madison where she is also a Faculty Affiliate at the institute for Research on Poverty. Professor Wolfe is internationally renowned for her research which focuses broadly on poverty and health issues.
